Several fellow Bitlairees were making cool things like masks and phone case out of leather. This spark of inspiration later and now I’m making a leather wallet!

Etsy has many cool patterns made by cool people. One of them has this cool pouch like feature so I bought their pattern to start with.

I’ll be using the laser cutter to cut out the patterns out of leather. After this the laser’s scorch marks should be cleaned up, the leather neated up and beveled, and finally stitched with a saddle stitch.

For use in a lasercutter, the pattern pdf should contain cutting lines only. Unfortunately, the downloaded pattern pdf contained many watermarks and guide lines. Inkscape can be used to clean up the file but it was several hundreds of objects to delete. I noticed the objects did have a same stroke opacity. The default “select by” options could not work with this. So a quick little extension to *select by stroke opacity* had to be made:

This quick little extension worked fantastic for this niche use case. After cleaning up the patterns and loading them into lighburn, the laser cutter could do its lasery things :D I graciously got leather offcuts from a fantastic person from the hackerspace to work with!

After the laser did its lasery things, queue the tedious process of removing the holes, cleaning up the scorchmarks with sandpaper, and fixing minor imperfections.

I ran out of the previous leather, but my fellow Bitlairean was kind enough to give me their offcuts (again! 😄) After another thorough cleanup, and adding minute amounts of wax to the sides for protection. It is time to learn the saddle stitch, and start stitchin YouTube creators were once again very helpful in teaching me a cool skill.

Leermomenten

Sommig leer is een stuk beter uit te laseren dan anderen. Ik vermoed dat vooral wat donkerder, en stugger leer beter is.
